From one perspective, giving is a privilege. It is a privilege because not everyone has the ability and/or the capacity to give. It is a privilege that God bestows for persons given this privilege to exercise, as a way of expressing kindness or goodness to others. The Great Lighthouse Foundation (GLF) exists as another avenue for the exercise of the privilege of giving.
Based within the depressed community of Tatalon, Quezon City, the GLF engages in programs and projects that help the community rise from its present condition, primarily through education and learning initiatives.
In the past, GLF was instrumental in the conduct of activities that redounded not only to the good of the youth, but also of adults in Barangay Tatalon. "We conducted a basic English course for elementary school-aged children that was attended even by some high school-aged students," recalls LA Principal Linda Torrenueva. A computer literacy course was also held through the auspices of the GLF.
The Lighthouse Academy (LA) is a 14-year old endeavor under the GLF that provides quality but affordable Bible-centered education to elementary schoolchildren of Tatalon.
The GLF's latest endeavor is the Lighthouse Educational Assistance Program (LEAP) that provides financial assistance to deserving high school and college students in their education.
The GLF is only warming up. "We want the GLF to live up to its name: a foundation for great works," related an enthusiastic Engr. Jedel Agron, a member of the GLF Board of Directors.
The GLF is looking to develop a scholarship program for elementary students at the LA. In the next quarter, the GLF hopes to sponsor another meaningful and socially-relevant parenting seminar to mark the LA's Parent-Teachers Fellowship. The GLF two weeks past held a parenting seminar entitled "Are you raising a homosexual in your homes?"
The GLF hopes to do more. And through us, it can.
"Hopefully, as time goes by, more and more people will come onboard, and help the GLF in its desire to be a force for good in the community."
Even now, the GLF is conceptualizing another scholarship project, such as the "Foster a Grade 1 Student" program. This future project envisions the sponsorship of students in their tuition fees and other educational needs that can cost up to Php25, 000.00. Prospective contributors for the GLF can be guaranteed that their contributions are indeed optimally channeled to the identified beneficiaries of GLF programs and projects , because the GLF Board of Directors counts as its Chairman, Rev. Reuben Abante, Pastor of the Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church (LBBC) and member of the Presidential Council on Values Formation (PCVF). Other members include Rev. Francis Dait, LA Principal Linda Torrenueva, Mr. Eric Torres, Mrs. Jeena Marquez-Manaois, and Engr. Jedel Agron.
Aside from financial contributions to the GLF, members of the Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church (LBBC) may also help the GLF in other ways, such as in identifying and/or conceptualizing cost-effective programs to benefit the community (see next page). Members may also pray for the GLF and its endeavors.
"Giving is a privilege. I hope that the more people realize this, the more people give and give to the GLF," a smiling Engr. Agron said.
